...on a planet far far away lived two little, concerned people called Lucy and Kurt Jewson.
Being concerned (for the planet, not generally) they decided to put their first born son in washable nappies. Although the world wasn’t saved immediately, they thought that they were taking another step along the long road called “doing your bit”. And they were...but there was a snag. Tom was a big lad. This, combined with his planet saving nappy, meant that his clothes were all somewhat snug around his bottom area.
Lucy, being the entrepreneurial type, had a brainwave.

|
“Kurt?” she said. “Yes, my love” “Why don’t we design our own range of baby clothes that will fit over cloth nappies?” “Err…because we have no experience of clothing design and manufacture, neither of us has run our own business before, we have secure jobs, a mortgage to pay, a young son etc. etc.”
Cut4Cloth went ‘live’ on June 1st 2004, and the business thrived, selling beautiful baby clothes to fit over cloth nappies, despite Kurt’s concerns! |
| Changing the Name, Not the Game! |
|
As the business continued to grow, Cut4Cloth became somewhat of a descriptive term. Not quite the effect that Hoover had on the vacuum cleaner, we admit, but you know what we mean.
With things moving apace, quite a lot of what we do isn’t exactly ‘cut for cloth’, with children's clothes up to 6yrs and our first range of breastfeeding wear (yes, there were numerous, humorous and risqué names suggested for this range – we might have grown up, but not that much!) |
|
So, we changed the name to Frugi - a word that not only rhymes with 'boogie', but also translates from Latin as 'Fruits of the Earth' which is a bit more reflective of what we're all about these days...
Don’t worry, though, we still have the same fantastic team and ethics here on Gear Farm, and the Cut4Cloth name will remain as a descriptive ‘stamp’ on appropriate items for babies between 0-2 yrs. |
| How are Cut4Cloth Items Different? |
|
In short, anything marked Cut4Cloth is, quite literally, cut for cloth, and here’s how…
Trousers and dungarees for babies and toddlers are cut to be a lot higher in the rise so that the waistband does not drag the nappy down. They are broader in the beam to so that little legs are free to wriggle as much as they like! |
|
Babygrows are longer in the body length, broader in the beam and all have a "gusset" (sorry that's a horrible word but I don't know what else to call it!) this gives a much better "3D" fit from front to back. Especially useful for night-time nappies that tend to be super boosted and therefore bigger!
Baby Bodies are also cut to be longer in the body and wider around the hips to have restriction free movement with a bigger bottom! |
| Why We Love Cloth Nappies | If you’re interested in finding out why we’re so keen to encourage everyone to use cloth nappies, we’ve got lots of Thoughts on the subject in our Frugi Blog! But don’t panic, we don’t want to preach and we should probably admit that we do occasionally use the odd disposable nappy when we’re staying with friends etc…after all, we’re only human! |
